Privacy Policy
Notia is a photo journal. This policy explains what data the Notia app and website handle, where it goes, and the choices you have. In short: your journal lives on your device, nothing leaves it unless you sign in or use an online feature, and we don't sell your data.
On your device
Your memories (titles, text, dates, tags, favorites, albums, people you add, and locations attached to memories) are stored on your device. Notia reads the photos you choose so it can show them, and doesn't upload them to its servers; the only exception is a photo you choose to send to an AI feature (see below). You can use the app without an account and without an internet connection.
Account
An account is optional. If you create one, your email address and password are handled by Firebase Authentication (Google). We store your account ID with your subscription status, trial dates, and AI usage counts in Google Cloud Firestore.
Sync and backup
When you're signed in and use sync, your journal text, albums, people, and tags are encrypted on your device before they're uploaded to Firestore. Photos are not uploaded; only references to them are. This encryption is tied to your account rather than to a password only you know, so it is not end-to-end encryption.
If you choose Google Drive backup, Notia saves a backup file to your own Google Drive. It can only access files it created there.
Notia AI
Notia AI is currently switched off in the app. When it's available, AI features are optional and need an account. When you use them, the text you send and, for photo features, the photo you select are sent to Notia's server and processed by third-party AI providers: Google Gemini, Groq, and, as a fallback, OpenAI. Notia doesn't store what you send or what the AI replies on its servers; your AI chat history stays on your device. For each request we record its type, status, text length, response time, and app version, plus daily usage counts, to run quotas and keep the service working. (App versions released before 14 October 2026 also saved the AI's reply with these records; deleting your account removes them.)
Location
Notia can read the location stored in your photos and, if you allow it, your device's current location on the map. To show place names, Notia sends coordinates to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Map images are loaded from CARTO, which receives the map area being shown and your IP address, as any web server would.
Contacts
If you choose to add people from your contacts, Notia reads your contacts on your device to create them. The people you add are stored and synced like the rest of your journal. Notia doesn't upload your contact list.
Usage data and crash reports
If you're signed in, Notia records how features are used (for example, which screens are opened) together with your device model, operating system, and app version, and stores these events with your account in Firestore. Fields that could contain personal information, such as email or name, are removed first. Usage events aren't stored when you're not signed in.
When the app hits an error, it may send an error report with technical details and, if you're signed in, your account ID.
Ads and purchases
Notia shows an ad only when you choose to watch a short rewarded video, for example to export one PDF without Pro. The Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) starts only at that moment, and in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland you're asked for consent first. (App versions released before 14 October 2026 started the SDK when the app opened and offered videos for AI credits.) Google may collect device identifiers and other data as described in Google's advertising policy. Purchases are handled by Google Play; Notia receives the purchase details it needs to confirm your subscription.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging gives your device a token so Notia can deliver them.
Sharing
We don't sell your personal data or share it for advertising beyond what's described above. Data is shared only with the service providers named in this policy, so they can provide their part of the service, or when required by law.
Deleting your data
- You can delete any memory in the app.
- Uninstalling the app removes the data stored on your device.
- Deleting your account in the app (Me → Account) permanently removes your login and everything stored with your account: synced journal data, usage events, AI request records, subscription status, and usage counts.
- Two things are kept after account deletion: error reports that include your account ID, and purchase records needed to verify payments. Email us and we'll delete your error reports.
Children
Notia is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal data.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update it on this page and change the effective date above.
